Colorado by Camper Van

Trip inspiration and photos by Ian Beckley.

The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter camper van known as Trip Van Winkle recently explored the wide open spaces of Colorado, cruising over Kebler Pass for exquisite fall colors, and taking the scenic route on US 550 between Durango and Ouray for cinematic wilderness views.

Million Dollar Highway

US 550 is also known as the Million Dollar Highway. It was built in the late 1880s as part of the San Juan Skyway, and is one of the most scenic, and jaw-dropping drives in the United States.

Owl Creek Pass

Trip Van Winkle also explored Owl Creek Pass and the area between Ridgeway and Mt. Sneffels, off the county roads 5, 7, and 9. Kebler Pass, Owl Creek Pass and the county roads are all county-maintained gravel roads, so most vehicles are safe to travel on them if taken slowly and with enough clearance. All three county roads offer unique and astounding views of the 14,000 peak Mt. Sneffels, while Owl Creek Pass takes you through the wilderness where scenes from True Grit were filmed!

Kebler Pass

Fun fact: Kebler Pass is the largest grove of aspens in all of Colorado. If you like that kind of thing … which we totally DO!
