Big fun in big sur
More than 15 years ago, a few months after I moved to California from New York City, I took my first bonafide West Coast camping trip to jewel of the jaw-droppingly beautiful rugged Central California coastline, Big Sur. We arrived in the dark of night and went straight to bed, tired from the focused driving navigating the twists of Highway 1. It was only the next morning when I could finally behold the spectacle that had lain hiding in darkness: I emerged from my friend’s RV awestruck by the magnificence of the chiseled coastal cliffs contrasted by the azure sea, almost quite literally at my feet, as our campground was nestled between Highway 1 and the shoreline. It was then that I fell in love with Big Sur, and I’ve never stopped loving that stretch of California’s coast more than any other.
That’s why I hope that you’ll find my Eurovan Weekender, Big Sur, to be the perfect way to experience California’s natural splendor. This Eurovan has been well maintained and fastidiously serviced by trusted German automotive specialists. The interior sleeps two, seats up to seven, and the pop-up table provides a great gathering spot, rain or shine. Comes with a full set of snap-on curtains for privacy. The CD stereo has a stereo jack (cable with lightning-adapter included) and USB ports (lightning and micro-USB cables included) that enable you to connect your phone or other audio devices for when you want to queue up music or other soundtracks for your awesome journeys.
Big Sur is chock full of items to enhance your experience, including:
- An “Adventure Library” of more than a half dozen outdoor guides for hiking, biking, and sightseeing to provide additional inspiration for exploration.
- Thoughtful touches in the form of silk eye masks and hand-sewn fanciful pillowcases for when it’s time to turn in from said adventures.
- The finest Bay Area coffee — complete with a hand grinder for the freshest experience — for when it’s time to get *your* engine going the next day.
- A JBL bluetooth speaker for seamless listening inside or outside the van.
- Luci solar-powered string lights for creating just the right lighting at camp.
- Kelty Noah’s Tarp for the flexibility to create additional shade or shelter for cooking on inclement days.
The Weekender configuration sleeps two inside the van, with the bench seat pulling out into a comfy 58” x 74” bed. The included 3-season tent sleeps two comfortably on the 4”-thick Exped MegaMat Duo 10 sleeping pad, voted the “best car camping mattress for couples” by Outdoor Gear Lab. Bedding for both the van and the tent features snuggly, warm blankets and custom pillowcases sewn by yours truly. If you want to experience full-on glamping, check out the optional ShiftPod2, 4” trifold full-size foam mattress, and folding full-size bed frame. Decor rugs also available upon request. Because the Weekender does not have an interior kitchen, your camp kitchen will include a two-burner propane stove and a Mountain Summit Gear roll top kitchen, which features a fold-out counter and two roll-top table surfaces.
Note that upon request and for an additional fee, I can provide creature comforts for your canine pal, including a travel bed, pop-up tent that fits up to an 80-pound dog, a cover for the bench seat, and an extra towel for your pooch. Foldable x-pen(s) also available upon request. The onboard first-aid kit also includes a medical guide and accoutrements specifically for treating dogs.
A few upgrades make this van a great choice for those looking for an adventure getaway:
- The included extra-wide Yakima roof rack with MegaWarrior cargo basket gives you the flexibility to securely stow luggage overhead, giving you more space to stretch out inside the van, or to haul extra bikes or other bulky sports equipment. A pair of heavy-duty tie-down straps and a pair of heavy-duty hook straps are included.
- The 2″ receiver hitch provides extra flexibility for attaching additional bike racks or storage boxes (not included).
- Optional: The Fiamma rear-mounted bike rack can hold two bikes while allowing for access to the trunk without having to unload bikes and without obstructing the rear license plate.
